HOW THIS MAP WORKS

> WHAT THE SCORES MEAN

EQUALITY INDEX — a 0–100 score for each country, published by Equaldex, a collaborative database of LGBTQ+ rights. Equaldex calculates it from two sub-indexes: legal status and public opinion. This page displays the score exactly as Equaldex publishes it — nothing here recalculates it.
LEGAL STATUS — Equaldex's legal index: a weighted summary of the country's LGBTQ+ laws (criminalisation, recognition, the right to change legal gender, protections). Shown as received.
PUBLIC OPINION — Equaldex's public-opinion index, built from attitude surveys. Survey coverage is incomplete: 14 countries on this map have no opinion data and their bar shows "—". Where opinion data is thin, the overall index leans on the legal side.
WORLD RANK — the country's position among all 197 regions Equaldex indexes, as published.

> WHAT THIS PAGE ADDS

Only the colours. The Equality Index is banded into five threat tiers: LOW THREAT 75–100 · GUARDED 60–74 · ELEVATED 45–59 · HIGH THREAT 30–44 · SEVERE 0–29. NO SIGNAL means Equaldex publishes no score for that territory. The tier bands are this site's framing; every number underneath is Equaldex's.

> WHAT THE MAP DOES NOT MEASURE

The index covers LGBTQ+ rights as a whole — it is not a trans-only score. It measures law and surveyed attitudes, not enforcement or lived experience: a country can score well and still fail you in a specific room, and a low-scoring country still contains people building safe lives. It says nothing about individual cities, regions or workplaces. For trans-specific legal detail, check the ILGA World database before making decisions.

> THE DATA

Captured from the Equaldex Equality Index API on 04 July 2026 and stored inside this page. Nothing is fetched, logged or sent when you use the map. Scores change as laws change — treat this as a snapshot and verify anything critical at the source.
▌FIELD ADVISORY // READ BEFORE TRAVEL
> This map scores national law and public attitude. It cannot see a street, a workplace, or a family.
> Safe countries contain dangerous rooms. Dangerous countries contain safe ones — people build them anyway.
> Scores shift as laws change. Verify locally before you travel or relocate.
> A low score is a description of a state, never a judgement of the people surviving inside it.
> IN IMMEDIATE DANGER: contact local emergency services first.
